Welcome to the Spinal Injuries Association

2010 marks an enormous milestone for the Spinal Injuries Association as we celebrate 50 years of working hard to give people a voice – to ensure people with a spinal cord injury have the opportunity to be heard by all sectors of the community with the aim of achieving equity, independence and inclusiveness.

At the Spinal Injuries Association, we believe in rebuilding lives, promoting independence and preventing injuries. As Queensland’s peak body for people with a spinal cord injury, and for people with the late effects of polio, we provide a range of high quality services that empower our members and clients either in their homes, at the workplace or in the community.

Redcliffe Dolphins playing it safe

Young Redcliffe Dolphins rugby league players were surprised to find out just how easily a spinal cord injury can occur when they were visited by Robert Spencer from our Spinal Education Awareness Team (SEAT) earlier this month.

Robert’s messages about playing safe and the consequences of sustaining such a traumatic, permanent and life changing injury resonated with the boys on a level they could relate to, as Robert has quadriplegia from breaking his neck while playing rugby league at the age of 18.

The Spinal Injuries Association would like to commend the Redcliffe Dolphins Rugby League Club for demonstrating their commitment to player safety and injury prevention by inviting Robert to speak with their players. For more information please contact the SEAT Marketing Manager on (07) 3391 2044.

Centacare support workers gain a valuable insight

Centacare - Aishling Support disability support workers recently gained a valuable insight into the challenges of day-to-day life for many of their clients.

Robert Spencer, from our SEAT at WORK program,  shared an honest and frank account with the support workers about his injury and what living life with a permanent, physical disability is like.

The SEAT at WORK disability awareness program is aimed at increasing awareness of, and respect for, people with a disability and discusses appropriate language and how best to communicate with someone who has a disability to ensure they remain a valued customer or client. The program also promotes a better understanding of the obstacles and community attitudes faced on a daily basis by people living with a spinal cord injury.
