Why is a change to the Constitution needed?
In early January 2024, Sporting Wheelies became part of Spinal Life Australia. Our Constitution now needs to be updated to include sports and recreation as part of our activities, to reinforce our commitment to healthy, active lives for people with disability.
As Sporting Wheelies serves many people with disabilities other than spinal cord injuries who are not yet members of Spinal Life Australia, we are also proposing to alter the wording from ‘members’ to ‘people with a disability’.
Including this wording means we can continue to apply for grants that are specific to sports and recreation programs, to help ensure our ongoing financial sustainability.
Constitution amendments
The purpose of Spinal Life Australia is outlined in the “Objects” within the Constitution. We are proposing to slightly alter three of the Objects. The revised wording we are proposing is underlined in the text below:
- Object 2. to co-ordinate and deliver opportunities to assist people with a disability to participate in sport, recreation and leisure opportunities to improve their health, wellbeing and social connections and to design and deliver best practice values-based services which address their needs and are member-driven;
- Object 4. to foster beneficial partnerships that develop the capacity of communities to meet the needs of people with a disability;
- Object 5. to develop and facilitate processes that encourage people with a disability to network and support their peers.
