Improving Access and Inclusion in Greater Brisbane
We are working with the Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA) and Local Government partners in Logan, Moreton Bay, Redland and Ipswich to identify existing accessible tourism offerings and to assist businesses in understanding how to become more accessible and inclusive.
This project aims to assist small to medium tourism businesses in Greater Brisbane (Moreton Bay, Logan, Redland, and Ipswich) to improve their accessibility and inclusion. We have been engaged by and will collaborate closely with the Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA) to conduct this work.
More than 4 million Australians are living with one or more disabilities. This figure only increases when considering Australians living with a temporary injury or illness or considering the friends, families, and carers of those with a disability. That is an enormous market ready to be tapped into, just by improving your accessibility.
Building on the great work done previously by BEDA and their partners, we aim to create a more comprehensive digital accessibility guide for Greater Brisbane to assist businesses in attracting a larger share of the accessible tourist market!
How will the project work?
The process of working with businesses identified by BEDA and Local Government partners will be individualized, but will follow the below general steps:
1. Engage with businesses/identify additional interested businesses.
Spinal Life Australia will work with representatives of BEDA and Local Governments to raise awareness of the program and encourage participation from businesses and attractions.
2. Distribute information about the program to possible participants.
Spinal Life Australia will distribute program material to businesses in the region and engage on a 1-1 basis where possible (with up to 10 businesses in each region).
3. Apply the self-assessment checklist.
Spinal Life Australia has a simple, straightforward template that businesses can use to understand some basic concepts of access and inclusion within their businesses. This can be applied by the business, or Spinal Life Australia staff to assist.
4. In-depth access assessment.
A more in-depth access assessment checklist will be completed by a Spinal Life Access Consultant on the first visit to the business, with a checklist appropriate for the type of business.
5. 1 hour of guidance to assist interested businesses in understanding the next steps. Includes provision of resources:
- FAQ sheet – access and inclusion pointing to other resources
- “Access Statement” template (Spinal Life staff will assist to complete).
- “Access and Inclusion Plan” template (business to complete)
- List of possible next steps for businesses to consider taking.
6. Volunteers with disability will be encouraged to visit these businesses (and other businesses and Points of Interest in the region) to:
- Assess physical accessibility of sites.
- Enter details of the place & leave a review at www.accessibleaustralia.com.au
- Share with friends and family.
Whether you are trying to understand what accessible tourism is, have already started on your journey towards accessibility or are looking to further improve your offerings Spinal Life Australia can assist.
