Spinal Life Australia welcomes the Crisafulli Government’s announcement that eligible Queenslanders will now receive disability parking permits free of charge – a significant step will ease cost-of-living pressures and simplify daily life for thousands of individuals and families living with disability across the state.
CEO of Spinal Life Australia, Mark Townend, emphasises that the reforms address long-standing concerns raised by the disability community about both affordability and accessibility.
“This is a practical and thoughtful change that will make a real difference in the lives of Queenslanders with disability,” says Mr Townend.
“I’d like to thank the Transport and Main Roads Minister, Brent Mickelberg, and Families, Seniors and Disability Services Minister, Amanda Camm, for their responsiveness to the needs of people with disability and the pressures they face.
“We know how difficult it can be for families to constantly move a permit between vehicles, especially when they’re already navigating the many challenges that come with living with a disability. Whether it’s getting to work, attending medical appointments, or simply being active in the community, mobility matters.
“Removing the cost and allowing for multiple permits gives people greater freedom and helps ease that burden, reducing stress particularly for carers and parents managing busy schedules. It reflects a more inclusive and understanding approach to policy.
“We thank the Ministers and the Crisafulli Government for listening to the community and acting on what matters. This announcement is a strong example of common-sense reform that puts people first,” concludes Mr Townend.
From 1 July 2025, new applicants no longer need to pay the $19.75 fee for a disability parking permit, with further improvements to follow later this year that will allow eligible households to hold up to three permits at no cost. More than 3,000 Queenslanders apply for these permits each month, highlighting the reach and relevance of this policy change.
Spinal Life Australia looks forward to continuing to work with the Government to improve accessibility, reduce red tape, and ensure that people with disability can live the lives they choose with dignity and confidence.
