We’re calling for expressions of interest from people with lived experience to join Spinal Life Australia’s Board.
It’s an exciting time to be part of our Board, which is leading Spinal Life through the transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and beyond.
To ensure we thrive under these changes, our Board needs to have a dynamic range of professional skills and expertise, combined with firsthand insights into spinal cord damage.
Potential candidates may be someone who has an injury or an immediate family member.
What skills and experience are needed?
Our Board recently underwent an independent audit which evaluated the skills that are already present and the skills that would benefit the organisation now and into the future.
The skills that we are looking for include, but are not limited to:
- fundraising skills and experience in the not-for-profit sector
- change management skills, particularly in relation to disability and health policy or related fields like aged care
- academic qualifications in clinical (including psychological) research.
All directors must also be able to understand and discuss financial statements.
How much time is required?
Our Board usually meets on the last Thursday of each month at 5.30pm for two hours.
Additional time and earlier starts are sometimes unavoidable due to guest presenters, committee meetings and functions.
Directors must also allow sufficient time to review reports that are provided to the Board in the week prior to each meeting.
A minimum of 20 days per year should be expected.
However, some directors will find more commitment is needed when they first commence, and if more time is required for corporate business or professional development.
Currently all Board positions are voluntary but genuine personal expenses are reimbursed.
What if I don’t live in Brisbane?
Board Directors can participate in meetings via videoconferencing or telephone.
However, you may be required to attend key meetings in person during the year. Travel expenses will be covered.
