Back2Work

Research shows that people who return to work in a timely, safe, and sustainable way after serious injury experience financial, social, psychological, and physical benefits.

Back2Work is a specialist project that provides early intervention vocational rehabilitation to patients with spinal cord damage, funded through Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC). We work exclusively with patients in the Spinal Injuries Unit of Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital, free of charge.

Our Vocational Rehabilitation Counsellors Tania Goossen and Belinda McLeod are available if you want to explore or discuss:

  • Returning to work or study
  • Starting a new job or career
  • Retraining and course information
  • Funding available around work and study
  • Possible modifications to the workplace to help facilitate your return to work.

The project also offers expert assistance and information for employers to support their employee to return to work.

Keena talks about how the discussions she had with the Back2Work team gave her the confidence to return to work as a school teacher after her spinal cord injury (C4).
Lachlan Chapman was an up and coming FIFO electrician, working big hours away from home. When he had his spinal cord injury (T8), he realised that he might want something different – but wasn’t sure how to go about it.
Tino was very keen to return to this job after his spinal cord injury (C4). Hear how his employer worked closely with the Back 2 Work team to ensure his transition to the workplace was smooth and safe.
Paul Gauci is a self-employed builder who owns and maintains a number of industrial work sheds. After his spinal cord injury (L4), he could no longer climb a ladder – and thought that his work days were over.

Partners

Back2Work is a pilot project by Spinal Life Australia in partnership with Princess Alexandra Hospital – Metro South Health and Griffith University.

The project is proudly supported by the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC).
