Spinal Life Australia is one of Queensland’s leading providers of advocacy, therapy and supports for people with spinal cord injuries. Because of our position, we can also support people with other physical disabilities affecting their chosen lifestyle.
Through the high quality support we provide, our clients live independently at home, maintain their personal and social networks and enjoy a better quality of life.
In 1960 a group of people with paraplegia and quadriplegia met to talk about the best way to advocate for their needs. That meeting was the beginning of what is known today as Spinal Life Australia (formerly Spinal Injuries Australia).
Initially called the Paraplegics Welfare Association, our services focused on advocacy, healthcare and lifestyle advice, as well as personal assistance. These services have expanded to include support networks for members and employment assistance. We also provide peer support to help people and their families transition from the hospital to home and the community.
Over the years, we have developed specialist knowledge on all things spinal. As a result we are Queensland’s peak body for people with a spinal cord injury.
For more information on our achievements read our annual reports.

The Australian Spinal Injury Alliance
The Australian Spinal Injury Alliance was established to provide a national voice for all Australians with a spinal cord injury. This alliance is made up of eight of Australia’s state-based spinal cord injury organisations:
- Spinal Life Australia
- AQA Victoria
- Independence Australia
- ParaQuad Association of Tasmania
- Paraquad NSW
- Paraquad SA
- Spinal Cord Injuries Australia
- Spine & Limb Foundation
The Alliance’s five key priorities are: government liaison, advocacy, injury prevention, information sharing and awareness raising.
Spinal Life Australia is currently leading a sub-committee of the Alliance devoted to injury prevention and awareness raising, including planning for Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week.
