Spinal Life Australia is one of Queensland’s leading providers of advocacy, therapy and supports for people with spinal cord injuries.
This places us in a unique position to offer our specialist expertise and knowledge to also support people with other physical disabilities and injuries that affect their ability to enjoy their lifestyle of choice.
Through providing high quality support, our clients live independently at home, maintain their personal and social networks and enjoy a better quality of life.
In 1960 a group of people with paraplegia and quadriplegia met to talk about the best way to advocate for their needs. And so began what is today known as Spinal Life Australia (formerly Spinal Injuries Australia).
Initially called the Paraplegics Welfare Association, our services focused on advocacy, healthcare and lifestyle advice, as well as personal assistance. These services expanded to include support networks for members and employment assistance, along with peer support to assist people and their families with the transition from the hospital to home and the community.
Over the years, we have developed specialist knowledge on all things spinal and are Queensland’s peak body for people with a spinal cord injury.
Our vision and values

The Australian Spinal Injury Alliance
The Australian Spinal Injury Alliance was established to provide a national voice for all Australians who have sustained a spinal cord injury.
It represents eight of Australia’s state-based spinal cord injury organisations:
- Spinal Life Australia
- AQA Victoria
- Independence Australia
- ParaQuad Association of Tasmania
- Paraquad NSW
- Paraquad SA
- Spinal Cord Injuries Australia
- Spine & Limb Foundation
The Alliance’s five key priorities are: government liaison, advocacy, injury prevention, information sharing and awareness raising.
Spinal Life Australia is currently leading a sub-committee of the Alliance which is devoted to injury prevention and awareness raising. This includes planning for Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week.
