About the Artist

Dwayne Wheeler is an emerging indigenous artist from Brisbane’s bayside, whose contemporary works reflect his Aboriginal heritage and connections to the land and sea.

Dwayne sustained a spinal cord injury in 2004, which affected his hand function. He has only recently found the confidence to pursue his art as commercial business. More of Dwayne’s work can be found on his website www.detourzum.com (currently in development for sales) and at Manly Creative Markets on weekends.

“Get Frilled” (acrylic on canvas, 2025) depicts a strong animal totem with family significance to Dwayne. The work uses a combination of modern colours and traditional patterns to explain how Dwayne lives between two worlds, and reflects his personal journey of finding strength, self-belief and connection through culture and community.
