Energex values safety with SEAT at WORK
“It opens your eyes a lot.” This was one of many positive responses from a recent SEAT at WORK presentation to Energex apprentices.
In 2008 Energex was a valued sponsor of the Spinal Education Awareness Team (SEAT) program, which has shared safety and injury prevention messages with more than 1.2 million children in more than two decades of service to the community.
This year Energex has come on board to participate in SEAT at WORK – a new program aimed specifically at injury prevention at the workplace.
SEAT at WORK offers two programs. The first program focuses on injury prevention. This is ideal for people who work in at-risk professions such as construction, mining, building, utilities and the transport sectors, including apprentices and trainees. The second program is focused more on disability awareness, which shows how best to communicate with someone who has a disability to ensure they remain a valued customer or client.
SEAT at WORK is an innovative and inspirational program that supports a company’s workplace health and safety initiatives. In addition, the program provides a reality check to staff, that is powerful, persuasive and very personal. The dedicated volunteer presenters provide an honest and humorous presentation that is thought provoking.
When asked about what they liked best about the presentation, one Energex apprentice said: “It really puts into perspective how you can become such an awesome, funny dude even after such an accident.”
That is why SEAT at WORK is so successful because it is all about real people sharing how unsafe practices and behaviours at the workplace and beyond have had devastating consequences for them, their family and colleagues, and their careers. This can be a real wake up call to young apprentices who might have not realised the extent unsafe work practices can cause on themselves and loved ones.
“It is so easy to switch off and have an accident, it can happen to anyone.”
