Post Polio Support Networks

Polio may be gone but its impact on lives continues.

Post-Polio Support NetworkPost Polio Support Networks are available to all members of the Association. Many people who contracted poliomyelitis in their youth decades ago, are now experiencing the late effects of polio, including post polio syndrome, as they age.

We have Networks in BrisbaneGold Coast, Far North Queensland, Rockhampton, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and Townsville to provide support and information to people dealing with the symptoms of the late effects of polio. They are active in advocacy, promoting independence and helping to raise awareness within the community, health and government sectors.

These groups aim to:

  • support members of the community experiencing the late effects of polio through mutual friendships and shared experiences
  • provide current information on polio and its possible late effects, and on the availability of community services to people who have had polio, their families, carers and advocates
  • assist in the formation and networking of more community support groups for people who have had polio
  • raise the awareness of issues affecting people who are experiencing the late effects of polio
  • promote an awareness of the polio networks throughout Queensland to potential users, community support groups, service providers and health professionals.

Visit this page if you would like more polio information, or contact the Association if you are interested in joining a support network in your region.

The 2012 Polio Health and Wellness Retreat will be held at Marcoola on the Sunshine Coast from 26-29 April. The expression of interest form can be downloaded here.
