Our services
A spinal cord injury is for life. It’s permanent and devastating, not only for the individual, but for their family and friends as well.
But there is life after a spinal cord injury. With our support and a great deal of inspirational determination, our members and clients live very fulfilling lives – still doing the things they used to but just doing them differently.
We support people with a spinal cord injury to rebuild their lives and advocate for greater independence, equity and choice. We do this through our high quality and contemporary services, which are provided by our extensive networks throughout the state.
From injury to independence – we are there for our members and clients:
- Our Peer Support program provides practical and personal support after a person has first sustained a spinal cord injury. This support continues – for both the individual and their family – during rehabilitation, the adjustment from hospital to the community and into the future during major life transitions.
- We provide personal assistance through our Personal Support Plus program. More than 650 skilled and dedicated staff provide 24 hour tailored, in-home support for individuals with a physical disability and for older people. The program provides more than 400,000 hours of assistance every year, including personal care, respite, domestic and workplace assistance, and holiday support.
- Ensuring our members are aware of the best support and equipment options available is the aim of our Spinal Advisory Service (formerly Community Advisory Service). This service provides valuable information and advice on health and lifestyle issues, equipment, and government services to individuals, their families, health and community workers, as well as carers.
- Our Equipment Hire service offers a range of equipment such as wheelchairs, hoists, mattresses and cushions for short or long-term hire.
- The Association’s Employment Options service remains the only service in Queensland that sources employment exclusively for people with a physical disability. Our staff identify employment opportunities and provide support at no cost to obtain and maintain employment, including assisting with workplace modifications and career progression.
- Information and resources for people with a spinal cord injury, their families and the community is available from our Information service, including the Association’s official publication, Imprint.
- Providing members with the opportunity to raise and address important issues that impact on their daily lives, we coordinate local and regional forums for people with a spinal cord injury or the late effects of polio (including Post Polio Syndrome). Our Member Networks and Post Polio Support Groups also provide members with information, support and the opportunity to share experiences.
- With a common goal to foster the development of inclusive communities, the four regional development coordinators of our Community Linking Program raise awareness and educate the community about disability and equity-related issues.
- Representing the needs and concerns of people with a spinal cord injury at all levels of government, business, the judiciary and the community, the Association advocates on a range of issues that can impact members’ lives.
