Disability Action Week award winners

Disability Services Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk presented Disability Action Week Awards to individuals and organisations from across the state as part of 2010 celebrations on 7 September.

Ms Palaszczuk said the awards were for individuals and organisations making a real difference to the quality of lives of Queenslanders with a disability and their families and carers.

“We need to ensure that people with a disability get equality, respect and access to services,” she said.

“People with a disability can lead extraordinary lives – they can achieve extraordinary things and make an extraordinary contribution to society.

“Today is an opportunity to recognise outstanding individuals who are making a real contribution to their community.”

Individual Award – Disability Services

Rod Walters was presented with a Disability Services Award for his advocacy on achieving reforms and improved outcomes on behalf of people with a disability. For more than 30 years Rod has lobbied for equitable access to housing, places of employment, public buildings and recreational facilities. Rod has been a long term member and a former President of the Association.

Cairns Regional Council – Queensland Disability Action Week Award

Cairns Regional Council’s efforts to make the Cairns community more accessible to people with a disability was acknowledged with a major Queensland Disability Action Week Award. Ian Chill, SEAT presenter, accepted the award on behalf of the Cairns Regional Council.

The Minister’s Award for Excellence

Blue Skies Vision Group, based in Brisbane, is helping to build a new vision for Queenslanders with disability and their families. Spinal Injuries Association CEO Mark Henley is a member of the group which was launched in September 2009. The valuable work of the group attracted recognition from Disability Services Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk, when she presented The Minister’s Award for Excellence to the Blue Skies Vision Group.

Townsville City Council Creating Inclusive Communities Award

The Townsville Creating Inclusive Communities Awards are held during Disability Action Week each year to recognise the outstanding efforts by groups, organisations, individuals and carers working toward an inclusive community in Townsville.

Congratulations to Spinal Injuries Association member and Board Member Scott Stidston who was the recipient of an Individual Award for his significant contribution to injury prevention education through the SEAT program and changes to local policies and practices around accessible and inclusive communities.
