New national parking scheme beneficial

Today’s announcement of the National Disability Parking Permit scheme will bring greater predictability and reliability for permit holders – and this Association welcomes the beneficial outcomes associated with Australia having one national scheme and permit.

Prior to this National Scheme, there were over 100 different disability parking permit schemes operating across Australia, making it difficult for permit holders and the wider community to understand the eligibility criterion, entitlements and obligations of a multiplicity of schemes operating in so many various parts of the nation.

Having a national eligibility criterion to achieve a permit is fair and equal. It offers certainty to all who participate in the Scheme, e.g. applicants and their families, the medical profession, State government regulators, the police and Local government.

Having a single national permit design and information thereon will assist the community to recognize Disability Parking Permit Scheme holders – and comprehend they have equal rights regardless of the State or Territory their permit was issued or the vehicle is registered.

Disability parking is critical to those who meet the eligibility criterion. Their quality of life is significantly influenced by their ability to access disability parking. This new National Disability Parking Scheme is a milestone outcome that will contribute to the integration and inclusion of Australians with disability in community life and travel across the nation.

Issued 28 September.
