Grants support Queenslanders with spinal cord injuries

More than 30 pieces of vital equipment have been added to the Spinal Injuries Association’s Equipment Hire service courtesy of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) and the Breakwater Island Casino Community Benefit Fund (BICCBF).

The Association was granted $29,760 from the GCBF and $4,816 from the BICCBF to purchase equipment including hoists, wheelchair cushions, shower wheelchairs, mattresses and slings.

Spinal Injuries Association Chief Executive Officer Mark Henley said the funding had been an enormous boost to the Equipment Hire service and would allow members and others in the community to hire the pieces of equipment on a short or long-term basis.

“People with a disability often require equipment to maintain independence and prevent further injury,” Mark said.

“This equipment will provide a useful option when equipment breaks down unexpectedly or is required for travel or other reasons.

“With the average hoist costing around $4,000 and a single wheelchair cushion costing at least $1,000, it gives our members peace of mind to know our service is there if they’re unable to replace their equipment immediately.”
