Free forum focuses on resident with a spinal cord injury
An emotional issue that can have an enormous effect on Townsville residents with a spinal cord injury will be discussed at a free public presentation next month (Wednesday, 16 September).
Professor Matthew Yau, an occupational therapist and sex therapist from James Cook University (JCU), has offered his services, to speak with Spinal Injuries Association members and other residents in the community who have a spinal cord injury.
Sexuality and having a disability is a major issue that was identified by our North Queensland members, and as one in five Australians has a disability (ABS 2008), this further highlights the need for this type of forum.
Professor Yau works in JCU’s School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine and Rehab and is an expert in fertility and reproduction, sexuality health, sexuality and disability, sexual rehabilitation and sexual therapy.
At the forum, Professor Yau will share his vast knowledge about the importance of intimacy and how to enhance that intimacy in a relationship, as well as sexuality issues and concerns of people with a spinal cord injury, and a Q&A session at the conclusion of the forum.
“Disability and illness do not dampen a person’s need for intimacy and expressing and receiving love and affection,” Professor Yau said.
“Myths and misunderstandings surrounding sexuality and disability have discouraged people with a disability and their partners to engage in an intimate relationship.
“However, when intimacy needs are met between partners, more harmonious and satisfying relationships are often the outcome.”
Spinal Injuries Association North Queensland Manager Mary Langdon said while there was plenty of information and assistance for the practical requirements of people with a spinal cord injury, this could often take precedence over the physical and emotional aspect of this level of injury.
“And it’s important to remember that a spinal cord injury doesn’t just affect the person with a disability, but also their partner or spouse.
“We’re so pleased Dr Yau will be sharing his knowledge, which we’re sure will be of great interest to people with a spinal cord injury in the region.”
