Access & Equity Plan is good news for Brisbane

The Spinal Injuries Association congratulates the Brisbane City Council for its announcement to establish an Access and Equity plan for the City of Brisbane.

We particularly value Cr. Newman’s statement that the access and equity policy will be an overarching policy designed to ensure that Council has an integrated approach to making the city more accessible for everyone.

We believe that creating an integrated, inclusive community is a requirement of a contemporary society and that Local government is pivotal in achieving it. The ability for all people to be included and participate is the only way we can maximise this city’s social and economic performance.

It is true that people with a disability have been among the strongest advocates for access but it is evident that parents with prams, the aged, people with temporary mobility impairment (e.g. through injury) and people with a medical condition also have similar access needs. And unless services and venues are accessible, their families and friends cannot participate with them.

All those above, the wider community and visitors to Brisbane will be the

beneficiaries of this welcome decision by Council.

This Association will be pleased to support Council in the development of its plan.
